My first contact with yoga was in my 30s when I enrolled in prenatal yoga. Over the following 8 years I continued casually exploring other types of yoga classes when time allowed. Then a studio opened in my neighbourhood that was offering aerial yoga classes. I was curious to try but also doubted if it was a good choice for me as I lacked arm strength. I’m so happy I tried despite my doubts as I was ‘hooked’ after my first class. I loved everything about it! Some aspects of it were difficult for me at first, but I kept at it. I will never forget the fist time I was finally able to back summersault out of my sling! The best feeling ever!
I used to think that we should only do the things to which we are naturally inclined or have some talent for. But then I realized that what matters is just to try our best and do things regardless of how good we are at them and regardless of the outcome. Journey really is more important than destination. I initially enrolled in suspension yoga teacher training at the beginning of Covid to be able to continue to practice when my studio had to close, but during the journey I warmed up to the idea of actually teaching and decided to become certified so I could pass along this wonderful practice and the empowering feeling it provides. I now hold 200 Hr RYT, 50 Hr Suspension Yoga Teacher Training and 50 Hr Aerial Yoga Teacher Training.
When I’m not in my aerial hammock, I love spending time with my family, volunteering for causes close to my heart (animal rescue and rights), writing, listening to music, exploring nature, and veganizing every recipe. I believe that there’s no greater aspiration than the first of the five yamas described in the Yoga Sutra – Ahimsa (non-violence) – and that every day we need to try to do our best to live in a way that causes no harm to any living being, including ourselves.
