Yoga as a Couple!
Nick and I had moved to Williamswood 3 years ago and after driving past Halifax Yoga everyday, he suggested we check out a class. Nick had been doing yoga off and on for a number of years and I had tried it a couple of times, but I didn’t really enjoy it and figured it wasn’t my thing. I had never been one for going to gyms and preferred to workout on my own, but he convinced me and we thought it would be a great way to meet new people in the area.
We instantly loved it. I soon realized that the tutorials I had been trying to follow on our iPad to a robotic voice were nothing like this class. There were no robots! I actually LIKED it! The instructor was amazing and assisted us when needed. I may have fallen asleep at one point I was so relaxed. We left feeling excited, sore, and thanking God we enjoyed it because we had purchased an annual membership the first time we set foot in the studio that evening.
2.5 years later, Yoga, and HY, is a major part of our lives. You’ll rarely see one of us there without the other. It’s something that we really enjoy doing together. We usually go after work and if one of us (Stephanie) is starting to feel tired or looks like they (Stephanie) are trying to bail, the other one pushes us to go and give 100% while we’re there. And we’re always glad we did.
We encourage each other to try new poses and we’re proud when the other person accomplishes a new challenge. I’ve noticed my stress levels go down and my confidence go up and having Nick there with me when I do a new pose, even if it’s for a split second, is a huge plus. And if he’s meditating before class, well, I have to tap him on the shoulder to tell him what he just missed.
2.5 years ago I never thought I would be doing side crow or a headstand. And today, whenever we see someone at the studio doing something we’ve never attempted, we’re excited to try it as well. Our strength has improved and overall, we just feel better physically and mentally.
We try to do yoga daily, even if we can’t make it to a class. We both have the luxury of working from home whenever we want so taking a break from the computer and doing a bit of yoga is great. While initially we had joined HY to meet people and add something different to our workout routine, we didn’t realize how involved we would be. We’ve met so many wonderful people at the studio, from instructors to fellow members, and it’s a great community that we’re quite happy to be a part of.
