Yogi of the Month – Dan
My journey to yoga has been a bit of a weird one. I was never the type of person to even consider yoga, I thought it all seemed silly. I’ve literally had friends laugh when I told them I am going, because it seems so out of character for me. I’ve always been more of a team sport person and my typical workout was lifting weights.
Then in October, my mental health declined. I found myself in a state of crisis and needing to make some changes. I took some time off work and was looking for something to fill my time. Luckily for me, my sister in law is a yoga instructor so between her and my wife’s encouragement I agreed to give yoga a try. I never in a million years would have thought I would enjoy it, but now I go every chance I get!
My favorite classes are the Flow classes. I love that they are a good workout but finish with some mindfulness. One of my favorite things about yoga is that you get what you put into it. Some days you might not be feeling it and decide not to try that extra deep pose and the next day you could be feeling great and trying something new! There is no judgement, you feel accomplished for just coming to your mat. I don’t have a favorite pose, but I enjoy any pose that requires balancing on one leg. I am absolutely no good at balancing and often take a spot by the wall so I can catch myself when I inevitably fall, but I love the challenge. I get a huge sense of accomplishment when I finally stick it and stretch to my fullest expression.
I am very grateful that I found a place like Halifax Yoga where I feel a sense of belonging. I feel welcomed every time I come. Everyone is supportive and the staff are very accommodating. I am happy with my progress so far; I know I have so much more to learn and I am excited to continue my yoga journey! Thanks
